A very rare Morris and Co Hammersmith Rug circa 1888 commissioned by Alecco Ionides for 1 Holland Park London . Scroll right for a copy of the invoice a letter from Philip Webb about the ongoing renovations and images of the the interior and exterior taken by Bedford Lemere in the 1890’s . 67ins by 46 ins Provenance : By direct descent in the Ionides Family . Alexander Ionides a wealthy Greek Merchant born in Constantinople in 1810 moved to London in 1834 and became Greek Consul General between 1854 and 1866 where he met the members of the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood including Rossetti and Burne-Jones.His son Alecco acquired 1 Holland Park in 1875 and commissioned Philip Webb Walter Crane and Thomas Jeckyll to redecorate the house culminating in the final details mentioned in Webb’s letter to Alecco in July 1888 and invoiced in October . Sadly the house soon faded into obscurity soon after . Alecco died in 1898 and the house was sold to the Ilchesters and then after WW11 bomb damage was sold to the LCC in 1952 and subsequently demolished . Bedford Lemeres images remain in the V and A as does the wonderful art of the Pre - Raphaelites the works of Morris and Co and items such as Burne - Jones beautiful painted piano . This small rug is a direct survivor from this high point of late Victorian Decorative Art.
